Nancy G. Brinker released the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court’s affirmation that sexual orientation and gender identity are protected characteristics under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.
“Today’s landmark ruling by a bipartisan and ideologically diverse block of Supreme Court Justices fortifies what so many have spent a lifetime advocating for and working to achieve; that discrimination of LGBTQ individuals on the basis of sex is not only wrong, but also illegal. This is a victory for LGBTQ equality and workers across our nation. As we celebrate this momentous occasion let us also resolve to acknowledge that our work is not yet complete. More than ever, the United States must serve as a beacon of equality to nations throughout the world that seek to roll back or constrain the freedoms of persecuted individuals simply because of whom they love.”
